Before I started Session, I owned an online smoke shop. Over the past 15 years, itâs safe to say Iâve attended my fair share of cannabis-centered seshes. Cannabis Cup in Denver on 4/20? I was there the year Colorado legalized adult use. Iâve spent more than a few hazy afternoons perched atop San Franciscoâs iconic Hippie Hill, watching the Haight practically shut down from the smoke.
The style of these events has changed. Formats evolve. Some events have gotten fancier. But at the heart of it all remains the same thing: the plant, and a group of good-spirited, enthusiastic herbalists.
Over the years, Iâve fine-tuned a âsesh survival kitâ that ensures Iâm ready for whatever unfolds during these joyful, often all-day adventures. Whether youâre a seasoned attendee or headed to your very first 4/20 celebration, this list is designed to help you pack thoughtfullyâand stay comfy from the first spark to the final goodbyes.
Whatâs In My Sesh Survival Kit:
Hand Sanitizer
Letâs be real: if itâs a festival or outdoor event, chances are the bathroom situation involves a port-o-potty. A quick pump of sanitizer goes a long way. Clean hands = better vibes.
Alcohol Wipes
Sharing is caring, except when it comes to germs. I use these to give my glassware a quick wipe between rounds or when toking from a communal piece.
Sunscreen
A travel-sized tube of face sunscreen is a must. Right now Iâve got the mini Supergoop! in my bag, perfect for reapplying mid-afternoon if the sun comes out strong.
Chapstick
Is it just me, or do lips get extra dry after a few rounds? A swipe of balm keeps things smooth.
Breath Mints
Gum works too, but Iâm a mint person. When youâre talking to a lot of people or passing around a few joints. Itâs a small touch that makes a big difference.
Lighter
This oneâs obvious. Just donât get too attached. Itâs tradition to leave the sesh with a different one than you brought.
Individually Wrapped Dental Floss Picks
Sounds extra, but trust me. Thereâs nothing worse than discovering youâve had something in your teeth for hours. I usually pack a couple and someone always ends up needing one.
Nail Clippers or a File
Rolling and packing can leave your nails looking and smelling a little⌠earthy. A quick clean-up with clippers or a file can keep things fresh. Bonus: theyâre surprisingly handy for opening stubborn packaging.
Water Bottle
Yes, every sesh should have water, but sometimes it runs out. Find a bottle thatâs lightweight but holds enough to truly quench a cottonmouth moment.
Eye Drops
Not everyone gets red eyes, but mine tend to dry out especially indoors. A quick drop brings instant relief (and a second wind).
Advil Packets
Someoneâs bound to get a headache, especially at longer events. I always stash a few travel packets for easy access.
Fabric Band-Aids
Go for the fabric ones. They stay on better. Whether it's a rogue blister or a battle with hard-to-open packaging, youâll be glad to have one.
1/8 Teaspoon (Mini Spoon)
Sticky fingers? No thank you. I keep a tiny spoon on my keychain to help with packing bowls or scooping from a grinder. Functional and adorable.
Tide Pen
If youâre as clumsy with snacks as I am, a stain stick is your best friend.
Deodorant
Whether you're dancing outdoors or in a smoky living room, a mid-day refresh never hurts. Trust me, your sesh circle will thank you.
Facial Mist
Smoke and sun can be harsh on the skin. A gentle spritz feels luxurious and helps bring you back to life if youâre overheating.
(And yes, I always carry a tampon or two, but Iâll let you decide what essentials go in your own kit.)
Every year, 4/20 feels like a marathon. I leave my house in the morning to meet up with friends, and who knows where the day will take me. This little kit gives me peace of mind, I know that whatever unfolds, Iâm ready.
As the holiday approaches, remember to pace yourself, drink plenty of water, and above all, enjoy the day. I hope your 4/20 is full of laughter, good friends, and the kind of memories youâll talk about for years to come.
