What 135 Cannabis Consumers Taught Us About Modern Rituals, Gear, and Habits

What 135 Cannabis Consumers Taught Us About Modern Rituals, Gear, and Habits

To better understand our community and refine our product roadmap, we surveyed 135 cannabis consumers ranging from casual sessioners to daily daily-use connoisseurs.

Our goal was two-fold: map current consumption habits and connect with our most discerning users for follow-up qualitative interviews.

Here is what we learned about how, when, and why modern consumers light up.

TL;DR: Key Survey Takeaways

  • Balanced Audience: 135 respondents spanning ages 21 to 71 with an even 50/50 gender split, primarily discovering Session through social media and word-of-mouth.

  • Bongs Lead, Variety Rules: While water pipes remain the community favorite, most consumers rotate between multiple devices depending on the moment.

  • Routines over All-Day Use: Cannabis is deeply integrated into specific daily touch points: morning coffee, post-work decompression, and bedtime wind-down rather than continuous consumption.

  • Design Priorities: Users value easy-to-clean construction, home decor aesthetics, and smooth water filtration above all else.

  • What’s Next for Session: Hearing that users want water filtration and discretion without sacrificing portability directly inspired our next design phase....exploring compact water pieces and dab rigs that offer full functionality in a smaller footprint.

1. Demographics & Discovery: A Balanced, Engaged Community

Our survey captured a wide demographic footprint, with participant ages ranging from 21 to 71 years old (with 28 being the most common age).

Gender breakdown landed at a clean 50/50 split—giving us a balanced look across different consumer profiles.

Age distribution of survey respondents (n=135). The majority of participants fell between 26 and 35 years old.

Donut chart displaying survey gender breakdown: 48.9% male, 47.7% female, and 3.7% unspecified across 135 cannabis consumers.

How Consumers Discover Session

Social media and word-of-mouth drove the vast majority of brand discovery. Organic community sharing remains our strongest growth engine.

Chart showing Session Goods brand discovery channels: Instagram and Social Media lead at 57.0%, followed by Word of Mouth at 15.6%, Online Ads at 14.1%, Direct Search at 7.4%, and Press at 5.9%.Primary brand discovery channels (n=135). Social media and organic word-of-mouth drive over 72% of brand awareness.

2. Consumption Methods: Bongs Lead, but Variety Rules

It comes as no surprise that a brand built around high-design glass attracts bong enthusiasts. However, most respondents don't stick to a single device.

While water pipes are the centerpiece, our audience regularly rotates through a variety of consumption methods depending on the context.

Bar chart comparing daily vs occasional cannabis consumption methods among 135 users: Bongs lead at 79.3% daily use, followed by Vapes at 50.4%, Dabs at 45.2%, and Joints at 44.4%.
Daily vs. occasional consumption frequency across methods (n=135). Bongs are the dominant daily method (79.3%), though most respondents utilize a variety of devices.

3. The "Why": Relaxation, Productivity, and Making Chores Fun

Cannabis isn't a single ritual, it serves distinct emotional and practical functions throughout the day. When asked about their primary motivations for consuming, top responses included:

  • Relaxation & Decompression

  • Pure Enjoyment & Social Connection

  • Productivity & Relief

The "Chore Hack" Phenomenon

A fascinating thread emerged around mundane daily tasks: cannabis makes chores fun. Multiple respondents shared that lighting up turns tedious housework into an engaging game.

Donut chart showing chores respondents prefer doing while high: Vacuuming leads at 36.5%, followed by Dishes at 20.3%, Cooking at 18.9%, Deep Cleaning at 14.9%, and Laundry at 12.2%.Top household chores paired with cannabis (n=135). Repetitive tasks like vacuuming and washing dishes were the clear favorites.

While consumers love using cannabis to power through housework, virtually no one mentioned cleaning their glassware as part of that routine... maybe it was included in "dishes"?

4. Timing & Rituals: Integrated into the Daily Rhythm

The idea that consumers are high around the clock is a myth. Outside of a small subset of medical patients managing pain, the vast majority of respondents reserve cannabis for specific, intention-driven windows.

Peak session times across the day (n=135). Unwinding after work and morning rituals represent the most popular windows to light up.

Key Daily Rituals

  • The Morning Spark: The classic "wake and bake," frequently paired with morning coffee.

  • The Post-Work Transition: Smoking immediately after work as a clear line between the workday and personal time.

  • The Nightcap: A final evening session dedicated to winding down for sleep.

5. Location Preferences: Home is Where the Sesh Is

The overwhelming majority of sessions take place at home—specifically in the living room, on the balcony, or in the backyard. Outdoor settings ("Nature") ranked second, though many backyards naturally blur that line.

Chart showing preferred session locations: Mountains and Parks led with 63 votes, Beach and Waterfront had 51, At Home or Indoors had 47, Backyard, Porch and Patio had 33, and Travel and Scenic Spots had 9.
referred session locations (n=135). Outdoor nature spots and home environments remain the top choices for sessions.

6. What Consumers Want in Their Gear

When analyzing what users love (and hate) about their current hardware, three clear priorities emerged:

  1. Convenience & Low-Friction Cleaning: Form follows function. No matter how stunning a piece looks, if it is difficult to clean, it gets left on the shelf.

  2. Elevated Aesthetics: Consumers want modern, artistic designs that double as home decor and look natural sitting on a coffee table.

  3. Smart Engineering: Portability, discretion, and smooth water filtration remain essential. Users want compact designs that don't compromise performance.

7. Hardware Landscape: Session Ownership Insights

To wrap up, we looked at the specific devices sitting on our respondents' shelves.

  • 36% of respondents did not yet own a Session product.

  • Of the 86 respondents who do own Session gear, the vast majority own multiple pieces.

Bar chart showing Session Goods product ownership among 86 owners: 79 own the Session Bong, 57 own Session Accessories, and 39 own the Session Pipe.
Bong leads as the cornerstone piece, with strong cross-ownership across pipes and accessories.

Overall, multi-brand ownership is standard practice: modern consumers build curated collections rather than staying loyal to a single piece of glass.

Chart showing non-Session product ownership by category: Hand Pipes and Bowls led with 49 owners, Bongs and Water Pipes had 48, E-Rigs and Dab Rigs had 44, Vaporizers had 30, Papers and Cones had 25, Utility Accessories had 21, and Herb Grinders had 17.
Non-Session product ownership by category across surveyed consumers. Traditional glass and concentrates (E-Rigs & Dab Rigs) represent the largest share of third-party gear.
Bar chart showing non-Session brand ownership among respondents: Puffco leads with 18, PAX has 9, Grav has 7, RAW has 5, Volcano has 4, and GPen, MJ Arsenal, Santa Cruz Shredder, Toker Poker, and DynaVap each have 3.

What’s Next: From Broad Data to Deep Design

This survey gave us an invaluable bird’s-eye view of your daily habits, but one major takeaway stood out: you love water filtration, but you want smaller, more discreet options and better gear for concentrates.

Hearing that loud and clear pointed our product team in a very specific direction: designing a compact bubbler and dab rig.

To make sure we get every detail right, we didn't stop at high-level numbers. We reached back out to the survey participants who frequently use rigs or specifically requested smaller water pieces to get their exact wishlist.

Coming up in Part 2: We’re breaking down what our most discerning concentrate users had to say, and the pieces they currently rely on, and the "must have" checklist for any a design.
